Future Looks Bright :::: Submitted by Donovan W Elliot, Zurich

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever" Isaiah chapter 40 verse 8

I've been blessed over the last few days, by the wonderful New Year messages of my friends. I must confess that I had nearly been intimidated and unsettled, with what lies ahead...but I'm not afraid! I remain positive, very optimistic and I share your excitement about what the year 2004 holds, trust me, there is no reason to be afraid, because God is part of our future! As a young Zimbo abroad, I can face every challenge, every trail, every obstacle, knowing someone can answer those questions which life poses, the questions we can never seem to answer. The reality is that the situation is not that bleak, that our problems can be solved and things are not altogether beyond us. The impossible is possible!!! In personal relationships we focus so much on trust, but when it comes to God we never put our trust in Him. We try and figure things out with our own understanding, but God wants to take care of all those things we struggle to find answers for. The trust factor can only develop as the relationship (or experience with God) grows.

The optimism that always seems to greet a New Year never ceases to amaze me, it is like the grass that grows, because no sooner is that grass turned green, then it is again painted brown, by the scorching sun. So in the midst of this perennial euphoria that ushers in the New Year, a sobering question prevails: what can we do to make this year different? Well, start by avoiding cheap resolutions! Instead start a revolution in our lives based on the Word of God. Let every choice and decision we make this year be influenced and guided by God's Word. Let 2004 be the year when we achieve things that stand for ever. People make resolutions to quit bad habits: stop smoking, stop drinking, and so forth. The intentions are good, but like the grass they wrinkle, like the flower they fade. I used to make new year resolutions, but like most of us out there, I rarely kept them, but now my cry is God I want a closer walk with thee. Forget resolutions, we need a revolution in 2004.

For many years we've toyed with these resolutions about how we will stop one thing or another in the coming year, but real change is defined by revolutions. The modern world we live in, was defined by revolutions. The Agricultural Revolution, changed the way food was produced and brought modern techniques to farming, and it paved the way for the Industrial Revolution which brought machines, division of labour, the steam engine. It might have seemed like only a foolish dream to people, that man could invent a machine that could enable us to fly, but the Wright brothers had the will to see that dream come to life. The world we live in today, with all it's gadgets, is a product of those early revolutions. The politics of our world has seen Empires and Colonies become Independent States and Countries, through revolutions, where men have fought oppression en masse. This year - 2004 is not a year for petty resolutions. It's year for revolutions!

These revolutions, must be achieved by a combination of purpose and power. The two are inseparable in this quest. The resolution will only change a part of your life, but a revolution will change your whole life. So as we enter this new year, we need to make firm decisions, that will steer our lives on a new and better course. Decisions that will revolve the way we think, the way we act and that will ultimately determine whether this year will stand out from other years. We always seem to start the year with great promise and purpose, but the power or will to follow through those resolutions seems to fade as quickly as the mood of the season we call "New Year", that ushers in a brand new year, fades. Let this year be different!
