Contributing a photograph, a document or a memory
Read with the terms of use and the privacy policy.
Bulawayo’s history lives not only in official records but also in family albums, school memories, neighbourhood stories, letters and everyday objects. We welcome contributions that help preserve and understand that history. Please read these guidelines before sending materials for publication.
1. What we welcome
Photographs, memories, letters, school programmes, family histories, maps, posters, oral histories, translations and other materials connected to Bulawayo and its people. We welcome different perspectives and may ask follow-up questions about names, dates and context. Submission does not guarantee publication.
2. What to tell us about each item
Please provide, as far as you know: (a) what the item shows or describes; (b) place and approximate date; (c) name of its creator or photographer; (d) how it came into your possession; (e) whether you own or have authority to license its copyright; (f) names of identifiable people and any privacy concerns; (g) your preferred credit; and (h) any restrictions you want us to consider. If information is uncertain, say so; do not guess.
3. Owning a print is not the same as owning copyright
Having an old photograph, postcard, clipping or letter in your family does not necessarily give you the right to authorise its republication. Copyright may belong to a photographer, author, employer, commissioner or other rights holder. If you do not know the rights position, tell us. We can discuss provenance and whether publication is appropriate, but we cannot promise to publish material of uncertain ownership.
4. Privacy and sensitivity
Please avoid publishing private addresses, contact details, medical information or other sensitive details about living people without a suitable lawful basis. Photographs involving children, personal correspondence, family disputes and sensitive historical accounts receive additional care. You may request initials, anonymity, a limited caption or exclusion of particular details; we will assess what is feasible and lawful. Do not assume that a historical context removes all privacy concerns.
5. Sending material is not automatic permission to publish
An email or upload asking us to look at an item is not, by itself, permission to publish it. Before publication we seek clear permission for the specific material. We keep a record of the agreed credit and scope of publication, especially when permission is given by email. Earlier submissions are not automatically subject to a new licence merely because the Website later changes its Terms.
6. What publication permission covers
If you expressly authorise publication, you grant numo uno Technologies, as publisher of Bulawayo1872.com, a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to reproduce, display and preserve the approved item on Bulawayo1872.com and in related archival communications, including The Bulawayo Letter, and to make proportionate references promoting that published archive item. You keep any rights you own. We may make necessary technical adjustments, such as cropping for layout with care, scanning, resizing, transcription, accessibility formatting and light correction of faded originals. We will not knowingly alter a contribution to misrepresent its meaning.
Not included without a separate agreement: sale of an image or story as a print or other merchandise; standalone licensing to third parties; sponsor endorsements; paid advertising that uses the contribution as an endorsement; or an unrelated commercial campaign. The archive may use ordinary technical service providers for authorised hosting and distribution.
7. Credit and historical context
We aim to credit creators, contributors, collections and sources accurately when known and approved. You can request a credit such as “Courtesy of the [family name] collection”, a different name or no public name. We may add editorial notes identifying uncertainty, additional context or a later correction. We do not guarantee that every submission can be verified or displayed exactly as provided.
8. Corrections, restrictions and takedown
Contact us if we misattribute an item, publish information that should remain private, or if a rights holder objects. Please identify the webpage and explain the concern. We may temporarily restrict access while investigating. We will review correction or removal requests reasonably under applicable law; we cannot retrieve copies already downloaded or indexed elsewhere.
9. A simple publication-permission record
The following form can be completed by email before an item is published. Leave an item unchecked when permission is not given. The publisher should keep the reply with the item’s provenance record.
Item / file name(s): [describe the exact item(s)]
What the item shows: [description]
Approximate date / place: [details or unknown]
Creator / rights holder (if known): [details or unknown]
Contributor: [name]
Source / how acquired: [details]
Preferred public credit: [credit text / anonymous]
Restrictions or sensitivity notes: [details / none stated]
- I expressly permit publication of the identified item(s) on Bulawayo1872.com and in related archival communications on the limited terms in section 6 above.
- I confirm that, to the best of my knowledge, I own the necessary rights or have authority to grant that permission, and I have disclosed any known uncertainties.
- I understand that this permission does not authorise sale as merchandise or a separate commercial licence.
- I agree to my chosen public credit as written above (if any).
Name: [full name]
Email: [email]
Date: [date]
Agreement given by: [reply email / signed document]
Note for editors: If the contributor cannot confidently confirm rights, do not pressure them to tick the rights statement; investigate or restrict use instead. A submission may raise distinct privacy permissions for identifiable people, which this form does not automatically resolve.
10. How to contact us
Send enquiries and publication-permission replies to info@bulawayo1872.com. For privacy concerns, see the privacy policy. Corrections are published on the page itself with the date they were made, and the route for them is the contact page — there is no separate corrections document, because a correction belongs on the page that was wrong.
