Beacon Hill
The highest-lying of the suburbs, named for the survey beacon on its summit.
Beacon Hill is named for exactly what it is: the high point among Bulawayo’s suburbs, with a survey beacon marking the summit.
A note on the beacon
Survey beacons, the concrete pillars that mark trigonometrical points, were the fixed points from which the country was mapped. The one on Beacon Hill is described as the highest among the suburbs. The area is also known as Beryl Drive.
What we don’t know yet
Is the beacon still there? Who was Beryl? If you lived on the hill, we’d like to hear what you could see from the top.
