Lakeside

Named for the water at the junction of the Old Essexvale Road and the road to Waterford and Hope Fountain Mission.

Lakeside takes its name from the water: the dam beside the Old Essexvale (Esigodini) Road, where the road branches towards Waterford and on to Hope Fountain Mission. The suburb of Lochview is named for the same dam.

On the road to Hope Fountain

The road past Lakeside is old. Hope Fountain, a few kilometres beyond, was founded by the London Missionary Society in 1870, in the days of Lobengula’s first royal town. It is one of the oldest mission stations in the country.

What we don’t know yet

Fishing, swimming, sailing, the dam wall: what did Lakeside mean to you? We would like to hear from anyone who remembers the dam full, or empty.
