Bulawayo 1872

Malindela

Named, by the one account we have, after Lobengula's maternal grandmother — the mother of his mother, Fulatha.

Malindela is named after a woman: the mother of Fulatha, who was Lobengula’s mother. That makes her the king’s grandmother on his mother’s side. The neighbouring suburb of Tshabalala carries Fulatha’s own clan name.

A name we can’t yet confirm

Of all the royal names on the map, this is the one we know least about. Neither Herald article on Bulawayo’s suburb names mentions Malindela, and Wikipedia’s table repeats the same wording rather than adding to it. The explanation therefore rests on one account, and we would rather say so than present it as settled.

What we don’t know yet

If you know who Malindela was, or where the explanation of the name comes from, please tell us. This is one of the clearest cases where a reader can improve what we know.
