Montrose

Named by its estate developers, who gave its streets the names of Cotswold villages and towns.

Montrose was named by the developers who laid it out. They gave its streets the names of villages and towns in the Cotswolds, in England. Its neighbour Southwold was named the same way, and the same one-line explanation is given for both.

A name borrowed twice

Montrose is a Scottish town, not a Cotswold one, so the suburb’s name and its street names come from different places. Montrose Girls’ High School, opened in 1971, has the same name. Whether the school took its name from the suburb is a question we can’t yet answer.

What we don’t know yet

Who were the developers, and when was Montrose laid out? If you have an early estate plan or sales brochure, we would love to see it.
